Subject Description | The aim of this subject is the analysis and design of unit operations and systems handling particulate material. Topics to be covered are: Particle size, shape factors, differential and cumulative distributions, mean size, median size and specific surface area. Measurement of particle size. Generalised description of separation and classification efficiency. Hydrocyclones, screens. Mixing, granulation, crystallisation. Comminution, Bond work index, matrix description of size reduction, milling circuit simulation, size enlargement and agglomeration. Flow properties of solids, design of bins and hoppers. Motion of particles in fluids. Flow of fluids through granular beds. Incompressible cake filtration. Gravity sedimentation and clarification. Gas and liquid fluidisation. Pneumatic and hydraulic transport of solids. Fine particle-fluid forces and particulate fluids. |
Assessment | One class test during semester 1 contributing 20% to the final mark, as well as an examination not exceeding three-hours at the end of semester 1, contributing 80% to the final mark |
