Subject Description

This subject should provide knowledge of geology/geomorphology essential for later subjects in the Forest Science program and an introduction to forestry as an industry and a career. The geology component includes an introduction to the landscape of south-eastern-Australia and the geological processes that formed it; the relationship between crystalline structure, chemical composition and the physical properties of common minerals; rocks as aggregates of minerals; an introduction to igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks and weathering processes. The forestry component is to provide an introduction to species and forest types in the immediate area of Melbourne, to the diverse business of forestry, and to what careers in forest science involve.

Assessment

Two 90 minute written examinations at the end of the semester, up to 25 pages of short assignments or tests throughout the semester.
