Subject Description

This subject begins by developing the notion of reflection-in-action (Schon 1990). A reflexive stance, exemplifying reflection-in-action, will be emphasised throughout the seminar series. Time will be spent exploring and articulating the sometimes tacit values, beliefs, assumptions and perceptions which students hold concerning social work theory, research and practice. This will form the basis for examining a range of epistemologies and critiques relevant to social work practice - technico-rational, critical (feminist, radical), constructivist and postmodern. A broad theoretical schema will be provided (and critiqued) which attempts to account for multiple 'levels' of social reality - intrapsychic, intersubjective, organisational and political.
