A 1-hour lecture and a 90-minute seminar per week

Subject Description

An examination of sentencing law, the sentencing process, the purposes of and justifications for sentences, judicial discretion and sentencing guidelines, and the nature and effectiveness of the sentencing options available to the courts; an introduction to research into sentencing. As a result of this material students should understand the nature of sentencing and be able to evaluate research into the sentencing process.

Assessment

An essay of 3000 words, and a 2-hour exam or a take-home test of 2000 words.
