Subject Description | Socially determined variation in language: styles and registers, language varieties reflecting social class, gender and ethnic group; politeness phenomena, address terms, linguistic variables. Factors affecting language choice: bi- and multi-lingualism, code-switching and code-mixing, diglossia; language shift; language maintenance and language death; pidgins, creoles and lingue franche. Functional ecology of language varieties, impact of literacy on language, language choice in education, language policies in Australia and overseas. |
Assessment | Two assignment problems of 1000 words each, and a 2000 word essay. |
