Two 1-hour lectures and a tutorial per week. There will be no tutorials in the first or the middle week

Subject Description

Socially determined variation in language: styles and registers, language varieties reflecting social class, gender and ethnic group; politeness phenomena, address terms, linguistic variables. Factors affecting language choice: bi- and multi-lingualism, code-switching and code-mixing, diglossia; language shift; language maintenance and language death; pidgins, creoles and lingue franche. Functional ecology of language varieties, impact of literacy on language, language choice in education, language policies in Australia and overseas.

Assessment

Two assignment problems of 1000 words each, and a 2000 word essay.
