Two 1-hour lectures and a tutorial per week. There will be no tutorials in the first or the middle week

Subject Description

The sound distinctions occurring in human languages; basic articulatory, acoustic and auditory phonetics. Students will develop skills in perceiving, articulating, and transcribing speech sounds. Students will also learn how to interpret sound spectrograms and how acoustic phonetic techniques can be used to supplement traditional phonetic transcription.

Assessment

Regular practical assignment problems totalling 2000 words, and a 2-hour examination.
