Subject Description

An introduction to the basic concepts and tools for analysis of texts in literature and language studies. Students will learn to manipulate texts as data for their research, and become familiar with computing applications such as concordancing, electronic dictionaries, and marked-up texts. The emphasis is on practical training, and learning how to use available software tools for text analysis. Topics include Electronic texts and corpora, String handling and lexical analysis, Concordances, Textual Analysis, Text formatting and encoding.

Assessment

Two assignment problems of 1000 words each, and a class presentation of 1000 words, and an essay of 1000 words.

Prescribed Texts

A package of readings and software documentation prepared by the department.
