Subject Description | The subject provides a critical overview of the structure and organisation of work and of managerial practice in an era of globalisation. It focuses on major contemporary issues including: the social organisation of work and of the workplace; managerial practices in the firm; and transformations in work related organisations. To explore these broad issues, we will investigate specific topics including the division of labour within the workplace; workplace restructuring; the emergence of new management techniques and employment practices; and the influence of globalisation and technology. The subject will also equip students with the ability to assess critically the work of key theorists of work and management. Students will have the opportunity to explore a topic of interest in an empirically based research paper, which may include a case study of a specific workplace or firm. |
Assessment | A 3000-word research essay, and a 1000-word take-home test. |
Prescribed Texts | A subject reader and a published text, will be available. |
