Subject Description

This subject critically examines the diverse claims made about globalisation, paying particular attention to how the relationships between politics, economics and culture are configured. The various claims will be questioned in two ways. Firstly, we will explore how they deal with the issues of social cohesion and cultural integrity given the imperatives of global economic trends and forces. Secondly, we will investigate how they fare in the face of recent developments in the theory of modernisation. Topics to be considered will include: risk and uncertainty; trust and prosperity; citizenship and cosumerism; democracy and multiculturalism; new governance; institutional mediation; and the notion of stakeholder society.

Assessment

A research essay of 3000 words, and an integration paper of 2000 words.
