Subject Description

A study of the challenges of the European Unity initiatives in the European Community (EC) and the European Union (EU) and the changing nature of nation and state. The subject's context of the EC/EU is used to examine pressing questions about the changing nature of traditional and classical political categories, such as citizenship, nationality and statehood. It therefore examines the theoretical approaches to European Integration, different forms of the state and political system as well as forms of government. It further places the European Union issue and current debates under the microscope of political science analysis. It then explores the potential for an active common European Union foreign and security policy, particularly in the light of the Maastricht Treaty on European Union and negotiations on the EU's future governance. It further analyses the issue of rights and the challenges to the European Unity ideal.
