Subject Description | Power is a strong idea. From grand abstractions to the micro-capillaries of human interaction, power seems to be all pervasive. Nonetheless, it can be conceptualized and analysed in various ways from a number of different angles. This subject examines some of the major paradigms of power, how they problematise the issue of power and what kinds of research programs they generate. Each paradigm will be introduced by means of an exemplary study in which the conceptual framework is transformed into analytical strategies for evaluating and interpreting specific power 'situations'. The subject is research orientated with particular emphasis placed on the framing and execution of problem-driven analytical research. It will introduce students to a number of basic research skills for the critical analysis of political phenomena. |
Assessment | A research proposal of 500 words, and a critical essay of 2000 words, and a research project design of 1500 words. |
Prescribed Texts | A subject reader will be available. |
