Subject Description

In the lead up to the centenary of Federation, there has been a great deal of debate about the status of Australia's nationhood and national identity. This subject will examine these debates yet with a sensitivity to the wider issues involved, including: what it means to be an Australian citizen in the 1990s; the shifting patterns of employment and new forms of social integration; the changing role of the state; and the impact of globalisation on Australian politics and society more generally. Drawing on various approaches to political analysis, the underlying puzzle to be explored is: whither the Australian nation in the era of globalisation?

Assessment

An in-class integration of 1200 words, and a literature review of 800 words, and a research essay of 2000 words.
