Subject Description | The course is a survey of theoretical issues in bioethics and their applications to healthcare. The theoretical topics will be chosen from among such things as: death, killing and letting die, intention versus foresight, harms to future persons, duties to future generations, moral theory, individual decision making, consent, resource allocation, and social and political issues. The practical issues will be chosen from among such things as: euthanasia, end of life decision making, brain death, advance directives, surrogate decision making, cloning, genetic enhancement, abortion, embryo experimentation, infanticide, genetic tests, doctors' duties, patient incompetence, markets in body parts, and public health. |
Assessment | A 2000-word essay, and a 2000-word examination, and regular attendance and participation in tutorials. |
