Prerequisites

One single-semester Philosophy, Anthropology or Linguistics subject. Students who lack this prerequisite, but believe themselves adequately prepared to attempt this subject, should consult the Head of Department.

Two 1-hour lectures per week for the first 11 weeks, and a 1-hour tutorial per week beginning the third week of semester

Subject Description

A survey of the Philosophy of Language in the twentieth century and its antecedents, aiming at a description of the main trends, their ambitions, and the difficulties associated with them. Students of the subject should attain a broad knowledge of these trends, and be in a position to study them in further detail either within Philosophy, or in related fields such as Anthropology or Linguistics.

Assessment

Three essays, two of 1000 words and one of 2000 words, plus regular attendance and participation in tutorials.
