Prerequisites | All applicants will be required to sit for a selection test to determine their level of language proficiency before they are able to enrol in this subject. Students who are native speakers of English or whose language proficiency is near-native are not eligible to enrol. |

Subject Description | This subject aims to develop participants' language skills by increasing their awareness of how language produces meaning in texts. The curriculum includes a range of text types with particular attention paid to the way language is used in a variety of texts from Australian literature. Techniques used include summary, paraphrase, re-writing for different genres or media, and text completion. Students who complete this subject should demonstrate increased confidence in using language in a range of communicative contexts; improved vocabulary, reading and writing skills; greater familiarity with the distinguishing features of a range of non-literary and literary text types; improved interpretative and critical thinking skills; a heightened awareness of issues relating to Australian society and culture. |
Assessment | Oral and written work equivalent to 1000 words, and three written assignments equivalent to 3000 words, and a 10-minute oral presentation. |
Prescribed Texts | Collections of text extracts and details of texts to be purchased are available from the ESL Program at the Centre for Communication Skills and ESL. |
