Subject Description

This subject focuses on instances where sciences are involved with other traditions of knowing. Considering such episodes reveals central assumptions and foundations of the sciences in interesting and useful ways. Examples of the local studies that might be considered are mathematics and the learning of Yoruba children in West Africa, and ecology and how members of an Aboriginal community might work with environmental scientists over issues of land care. Case studies will be developed largely through the use of audiovisual materials.

Assessment

An essay and a classpaper totalling 3000 words, and a class test and an oral presentation, and a 1-hour examination.

Prescribed Texts
