Subject Description

This course examines the influence of late twentieth century theory on the production of postcolonial histories. The interrelationship between post-modernism, Orientalism, feminism, and Gramscian theory will be explored with particular reference to recent historical studies of South and East Asia. As a result of undertaking this subject, students should have an understanding of the philosophical underpinnings of postcolonial theory and be able to analyse postcolonial historical writing in terms appropriate to its genealogy.

Assessment

Written work totalling 5000 words.
