Subject Description

This subject will examine the historical and theoretical background for the major colonisation movements of ancient Greece, and the experience of Greek settlers throughout the Mediterranean basin and into Asia Minor between 800 BC and AD 200. Major themes will include the process of construction and maintenance of Greek civic and cultural identity and nationalism; multiculturalism in antiquity, cross-cultural relations, and Greek perceptions of and attitudes to non-Greeks or 'barbarians'.
