Subject Description

This subject focuses on the development of monasticism from its beginnings in the desert, through the influential Benedictine Order, to the innovative orders of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries: the Franciscans, the Dominicans, and the 'fighting monks' the Military Orders. We explore the contribution of outstanding men and women in this area, the immense contribution they made to medieval society, and the nature of the power they wielded. Through the texts they themselves wrote, we look at the medieval world through their eyes.

Assessment

Written work totalling 4000 words.
