Subject Description

This subject examines the social, political and cultural history of Florence from 1282 to 1530: surviving republicanism in an age of despotism. On completion of the subject students should: have a rounded picture of a particular past social and cultural context which has left a profound impact upon European culture of the succeeding centuries up to our own; be able to reflect on the nature of the various forms of human association in that society, and the relationship between them and ideas of 'community', 'government' and 'state'; be able to reflect on the nature and role of both verbal and visual rhetoric in expressing and consolidating ideas of social order, both this-worldly and other-worldly.

Assessment

Written work totalling to no more than 4000 words.
