Subject Description

This subject traces the history of the Central Activities District from the time of first European settlement in 1835 until the present day. It explores (in comparative perspective) the social and spatial development, and the interwoven cultural constructions, of inner Melbourne. The subject combines classroom instruction with applied research work. Particular attention will be given to the vanished immigrant working-class neighbourhood of 'Little Lon', integrating the surviving documentary and material tracings from this precinct in order to puncture the 'slum' myths which cloud public knowledge about it, and thereby explore within its local horizons.

Assessment

Two essays of 2000 words each. There is a hurdle requirement of 50% attendance at tutorials and excursions in order for written work to be accepted for assessment.
