Subject Description

The development of nationalism as the dominant ideology of the Indonesian state, in the light of theories of nationalism. On completion of this subject students should be able to: test the applicability of theories of comparative politics about nationalism and ethnicity to the Indonesian historical experience in the twentieth century; question whether nationhood and ethnicity are primordial givens or 'imagined communities'; compare and contrast the dilemmas of the Indonesian national motto 'Unity and Diversity' with those of Australian aspirations for a united but multicultural society; understand why the state with the largest Muslim population in the world is not an Islamic state.

Written work totalling 4000 words.
