Subject Description

This subject examines Australian histories from WWI through to the 1990s, looking at how key events and social trends (war, depression, immigration, economic developments, indigenous rights, regionalism, urbanization etc) have shaped notions of identity, community and nationhood; at the relationships between public and private historical experiences, with particular reference to oral histories and life stories; and at how social tradition, race relations, sense of place etc have influenced understandings of and contestations over the meanings of 'Australianness' and 'Australia' in the twentieth century.

Assessment

Written work totalling 4000 words, and 10% tutorial participation. 50% attendance at tutorials is required.
