Subject Description

A study of society in the great south land. It will explore the dreams, ideas, beliefs and fears that have shaped Australia and focus on the impact of peoples and their institutions on each other and on the land and its ecology. Beginning with the epic story of the first Australians, it moves through the European invasion, the convict world, the construction of a New World society, the immigrant experience, the building of the cities and the emergence of a complex metropolitan nation by 1914. Tutorial classes will focus on a group of set texts, including a novel, and will include workshops on textual study and essay writing.

Assessment

Written work totalling 4000 words.
