Subject Description

A selection of texts written since World War II. This subject analyses contemporary German prose and poetry springing from the immediacy of the Holocaust. Attention will also be given to the East German poet, Johannes Bobrowski, especially in the light of the significance of East European, and in particular of the Baltic, intellectual tradition in his writings. Bobrowski's role will be highlighted as an example of the quest for peace and reconciliation, following the wartime apocalypse. On completion of the subject, students should have acquired a detailed knowledge of a number of texts, a knowledge of both major (Celan, Laske-Schüler) and minor (Coryllis, Kopp) post-war German writers and should have reached a good standard of analysis and critical evaluation.

Assessment

An assignment or classpaper of 1000 words, and written work totally 5000 words.

Prescribed Texts

A subject reader will be available.
