Subject Description | Fairy tales represent a world in which the universal human longing for happiness and fulfilment comes true. As this possibility hardly exists in ordinary life, the action of the fairy tale takes place in a world of magic and make believe. Since purely literary criteria do not do justice to fairy tales, other approaches, such as historical, sociological and psychological interpretations, are also explored. A number of fairy tales will be examined in the light of Propp's 'Morphologie des Märchens'. Typical fairy tale motifs and characters will be examined as well as the mysterious life some fairy tales have led within the wider European tradition. |
Assessment | An assignment or classpaper of 1000 words, and written work totalling 4000 words. |
