Subject Description | The subject comprises three components: 1. A course of lectures and seminars, held throughout the year, which addresses a range of issues related to contemporary research in geography and to the historical and philosophical evolution of the discipline. 2. Preparation of an extended review of the literature related to the subject matter of the student's individual thesis, covering both specific research in this area, and also the broader context within which the review is situated. 3. Research methodology lectures and practical exercises covering three methodology areas chosen from the following list: Introduction to statistics in the social sciences; Geographical Information Systems; Survey design and analysis; Qualitative research methods; Experimental design and analysis. |
Assessment | A total of 18,000 words comprising: A literature review of 6000 words, and practical exercises on research methods for three elective modules totaling 6000 words, and an essay and short seminar papers related to the philosophy and scope of geography as a discipline totalling 4000 words, and two oral presentations totalling 40 minutes on research proposal and research results. Attendance at departmental and other prescribed seminars is compulsory, as is completion of three methodology modules. |
