Subject Description

The subject will focus on a number of texts in contemporary Italian in order to acquaint students with some of the main non-literary registers (e.g. journalistic, bureaucratic etc.). It will also include a study of Jakobson's linguistic functions and the study of a variety of styles in writing. There will be emphasis on advanced non-literary translation, especially in problem areas. On completion of this subject, students should have further refined their linguistic skills, written and oral, have become acquainted with the notion of linguistic function, and have acquired the ability to discuss in Italian, both orally and in writing, extended prose texts, literary and non-literary.

Assessment

Class tests and written work equivalent to 500 words, and two hours of written tests, and a 20-minute oral test, and a 1000-word composition in Italian.

Prescribed Texts
