A 1-hour lecture and a 1-hour tutorial per week

Subject Description

This subject explores in greater depth key aspects of French civilisation and further develops language skills in their cultural context. Students can choose between translation, phonetics, auto-fiction, the classical playwright Molière, and popular culture (one hour per week). The mini-options are taught in French in a seminar format, and are designed to allow students to pursue language study in a specific linguistic or cultural field of their choice, preparing them for the full-fledged cultural options offered in second, third and fourth year. Regular writing activities for the options ensure development of writing skills in French in a range of genres. Class tutorials in French (one hour per week), further explore civilisation topics in detail and enhance students' ability to participate in discussion. The subject is particularly helpful for students wishing to pursue further studies in French and the exchange and study abroad programs offered by the Department (e.g. Lyon, Bordeaux).

Assessment

Class exercises totalling 1000 words, and a 1000-word essay (in French) or equivalent for mini-options. Students must attend a minimum of 75% of classes in order to be eligible to pass the subject.

Prescribed Texts

Civilisation texts are included in the Livret de l'étudiant II; for mini-options. Materials will also be prepared by the department.
