116-005 French I: Contemporary France and 116-006 French I: Language in Context I or equivalent. Students must be concurrently enrolled in 116-008 French I: Language in Context II.

Subject Description

Various exercises and activities designed to consolidate and develop further the linguistic and communication skills gained in first semester: grammar exercises which explore more sophisticated structures (such as argumentation), group work and short presentations and listening comprehension. Students are also introduced to phonetics. Textual studies continue in a seminar, moving on to the work of Aymé, Ernaux, Sartre, and Robbe-Grillet. Students continue to develop their reading comprehension skills, and build on skills in critical analysis acquired in first semester.

Assessment

Written and oral work equivalent to 1500 words, and a 10-minute oral test, and a 60-minute written language test, and a textual studies essay totalling 1000 words.
