This course is optional for Japanese 4B students. However, it is strongly recommended for those who intend to take Japanese 5A/5B in the following year.

Subject Description

The understanding of culture-specific expressions and phenomena requires factual/historical background knowledge; this is what the course is aiming at. Topics have been selected carefully to provide students with an adequate frame of reference in order to discuss current issues in Japan via cross-cultural analysis.

Assessment

Assignments and quizzes totalling 2000 words, and a 1-hour examination, and a 20-minute oral project work presentation. An additional translation exercise totalling 1000 words for 4th-year. Students are required to attend a minimum of 70% of all classes in order to be eligible to take examinations.
