Subject Description

This subject introduces students of Japanese language to various elements of Japanese popular culture as well as the academic approaches taken when looking at popular culture. The subject includes a brief history of popular culture in Japan, and an examination of the various media of popular culture including popular literature, manga (comics), magazines, newspapers, television and film, and music. The subject aims to analyse the relationship between popular cultural phenomena and society in general, including a discussion of popular culture as both a product and a determinant of national and gender identity.

Assessment

Written work totalling 4000 words. Class participation will also be assessed. Students are required to attend a minimum of 70% of all classes in order to be eligible to submit the final essay.
