Subject Description

This subject first studies the images of Muslim societies prevalent in the West. For this, selected sections from Western literature and media will be examined. Then such images will be put against the reality of the Muslim World - both past, and contemporary. For this, particular attention will be given to a study of the values, beliefs, practices and cultural rituals which shaped Muslim societies from its conception until now. The origin and development of Muslim societies through these factors, will be traced and studied. Special attention will be given to both unity and diversity in the Muslim World, spanning across vast areas of Asia, Africa and Europe. A survey of ways in which Muslim life has changed under the impact of colonisation and partial Westernisation will be done, as a means of understanding how and how far does Islam allow adjustments to ever-changing circumstances.
