Prerequisites

Students must be enrolled in the Indonesian combined Honours Program or in Islamic Studies/Asian Studies. Knowledge of Indonesian is required. Enrolment in the subject is subject to approval of the Coordinator. Students should note that approval of a course of reading will be subject to availability of staff with expertise in the field concerned.

A 1-hour seminar per fortnight, and 7 hours contract reading per week

Subject Description

Islam in Southeast Asia, Indonesian linguistics, modern Indonesian and Malay literature, modern Indonesian history, politics and economics, Indonesian anthropology. Students will learn (1) to undertake independent research in Indonesian and Malaysian studies in areas of interest to them for which supervision is available, and (2) to present the findings of their research in a scholarly manner.

Assessment

Written work totalling 5000 words.
