Subject Description

Students will be introduced to Chinese views on social dynamics and stratification, and to the new roles outlined for party members, businessmen, overseas Chinese, women and others. The subject will help students to become acquainted with some of the concepts used to legitimise the present social and political system, such as 'Socialism with Chinese characteristics' or the 'Socialist market economy'. Analysis will to a large extent be based on original Chinese literary and scholarly sources, in English translation.

Assessment

Tutorial participation, and written work totalling 4000 words.
