Subject Description

Using texts of literature, philosophy, and intellectual history, supplemented by films of both Western and Chinese origin, this subject will examine both how the Chinese are imagined and portrayed by Western cultures, and how the Chinese depict themselves.

Assessment

Class participation, a term paper of 2500 words, and homework or in-class work of 500 words, and a 1-hour exam.
