Subject Description

This subject will develop skills such as (a) a refined use of idiomatic and conversational forms (b) a level of proficiency in written structures of sophisticated complexity and the capacity to command their use freely; and (c) an independent style in written language use. It will also cover some principles of analysis of Modern Arabic literary texts and application of such principles, some of the important issues in modern Arabic literature and translation of Arabic texts of medium level difficulty. Text types may include biographies, diaries, drama, short stories, collected letters, articles, essays and novels. Students will choose any 4 units from the following: (a) speaking; (b) writing; (c) translation; (d) Arabic literature; (e) grammar; (f) guided reading; and (h) research methods.

Assessment

Written work totalling 1500 words, and a 2-hour examination, and a 15-minute aural/oral test. Weighting of assessment components will be made known at commencement of the unit. fourth year students will write an additional essay of approximately 1000 words.
