Subject Description

This subject will develop students' skills such as (a) the capacity to use some basic idiomatic and conversational forms and ability to use them freely in speech; (b) proficiency in written structures of moderate complexity and the capacity to use such structures clearly and accurately; (c) interpreting messages of medium level of complexity occurring in a variety of audio-visual media and individual and group spoken forms. It will also cover some aspects of advanced Arabic syntax and morphology, the historical development of Arabic language and literature up to the modern period including some examples of literary writing in the modern period, and translation of texts of moderate difficulty from Arabic to English and vice versa using dictionaries. Students will choose any 4 units from the following: (a) speaking; (b) writing; (c) translation; (d) Arabic literature; (e) grammar; (f) guided reading and (h) research methods.

Assessment

Written work totalling 1500 words, and a 2-hour examination, and a 15-minute aural/oral test. Weighting of assessment components will be made known at commencement of the unit.
