Subject Description

This subject does not introduce students how to read or write in the Arabic script. It is intended to serve the needs of those students whose aim is not to write Arabic, but to learn how to speak Modern Standard Arabic that will serve them well in almost any Arab country. The emphasis is on developing students' speaking and listening skills in the most commonly used form of spoken Arabic throughout the Arab world. This level focuses on developing students' capacity to identify and repeat words, phrases and sentences heard in meaningful contexts in Arabic, and to communicate with others about topics associated with home, family, friends, university, work, travel, staying at a hotel, eating at a restaurant, going to cinema, visiting famous places, shopping, visiting the doctor, or buying tickets at the railway station etc. Throughout the course, students will be provided with models of verbal interaction and ample opportunities to practise them in and outside the classroom context. In this subject, students will not be given any texts written in the Arabic script.

Assessment

Weekly aural/oral tests, and two 15-minute aural/oral tests, and a 30-minute aural/oral test.
