Subject Description | It is an intensive introduction to contemporary Jewish life and culture, with an emphasis on Israel and the Diaspora. A major part of the course will be concerned with some of the key events, ideas and movements that shaped Jewish history. A major part of the course will be concerned with some of the cardinal events and movements that have shaped Jewish history such as the impact of Zionism, the origins of anti-semitism and the Holocaust. In addition there will be an examination of current issues and problems facing the Jewish people such as assimilation, secular-orthodox tensions, Ashkenasim and Sephardim and the Law of Return. The general evolution of the different streams of Judaism is considered, including the Orthodox, Reform and Conservative religious movements. Students will study a selection of short-stories, poems, songs, newspaper articles, critical documents and audio-visual materials to gain a better sociological, cultural, political and literary understanding of the topics explored. |
Assessment | One seminar paper of 1000 words, and two essays of 1500 words each. |
