Subject Description

This subject focuses on mythic themes in a wide cross-cultural context. Taking specific themes in Greek myth as its starting point (eg. the trickster figure, birth and cosmogony, the quest, the archer/healer) we examine other traditions (including the Roman, American, Celtic, Norse, and Egyptian) where similar narrative themes occur. Some attention is also devoted to the way that some of these themes emerge in a modern cultural context (especially in the cinema). The emphasis in the subject is on the principal themes and cultural significance of the myths studied, and on some of the major scholarly approaches to the subject of Comparative Mythology.

Assessment

Tutorial participation, and a research essay of 2500 words, and a reflective essay of 1500 words.
