Subject Description

This subject explores Greek and Roman sculpture by thematic not chronological discussion. Some of the key concerns of ancient sculptors, their patrons and audience are the context and setting of sculpture, tradition vs innovation in style and function, portraiture especially of rulers, the use of myth as subject matter, nudity/gender distinctions and methods of training. These and other topics will be analysed through current theoretical approaches to the study of sculpture.
