Subject Description

The heroic epic tradition of Gilgamesh, Homer and Virgil, with attention also to Apollonius and Catullus. Students on completion of the subject should have acquired an understanding of what is meant by 'epic' in its ancient literary context, have an appreciation of ancient epic through the reading of primary texts, and have developed an understanding of the changes in the epic genre in antiquity.

Assessment

A Research essay 2500 words, and a reflective essay 1500 words, and tutorial participation.
