Subject Description

This subject critically explores developments in genre criticism from the 1950s to the present day through a close study of the western. The following will be explored: the historical development of genre criticism; evolution theories of genre development; generic hybrids; the international impact of genre formation; the relationship between film reality and generic reality. The western will be studied through its various stages of development, including classical, revisionist and spaghetti westerns. In addition, the impact of westerns on other genres such as samurai films, action films, horror films, and science fiction will be a major focus of analysis

Assessment

An essay and a classpaper totalling 4000 words.
