Subject Description

This subject deals with art and architecture in Italy, especially Rome, Florence, and Parma, with a particular emphasis on the work of Michelangelo, as sculptor, painter, and architect and his influence, and on Raphael and his school. Attention is paid to architectural principles and practice, especially in relation to Michelangelo, Giulio Romano, and Palladio. The concept of Mannerism, and the aesthetic principles of the sixteenth century are addressed, as well as problems of style, iconography and patronage. Other artists considered include Correggio, Parmigianino, Vasari, Bronzino, and Bramante.

Assessment

A 2-hour visual test, and an essay of 2000 words.
