Subject Description

This course studies the origins of the art, archaeology and architecture of early Christianity and the impact of Constantine on Christian beliefs and their various expressions in the fourth and fifth centuries. The intention is to discover how the emerging dogmatic consensus expressed itself in architecture, art and archaeological artefact. In this process will be seen the final transformation of Christianity from Jewish sectarian movement into profoundly hellenised state religion.
