Zoology subject descriptions
A specialisation in Zoology subjects can lead to a wide range of careers in life science including biomedical science and conservation biology. Zoology subjects are designed to provide students with a basic knowledge of the classification, diversity, functioning, ways of life and evolution of animals; and to develop some depth of understanding of selected aspects of animal life including ecology (particularly marine ecology), behaviour, physiology, reproductive biology and development, conservation biology, biology of Australian mammals and evolutionary biology.
For all areas the suggested subjects are:
Biology 600-141 and 600-142 (Before 1996: 600-101 Biology)
Chemistry 610-141 + 610-142 or 610-161 + 610-162 (or before 1998: 610-121 and 610-122)
Mathematics and Statistics 620-160
Additional 100-level subjects from Biology, Earth Sciences, Geography, Mathematics and Statistics, Physics, Psychology, etc.
Zoology subjects at 200-level may be studied either as lecture-and-practical combinations, or as lecture-only subjects. Students intending to pursue major studies of Zoology at 300-level should select the lecture-and-practical combinations of 200-level subjects. Students are advised to take note of prerequisites for the 300-level subjects when selecting 200-level subjects.
