Botany subject descriptions
Subjects in second and third year aim to give a lively and modern introduction to the principles of plant biology. Subjects in second year cover plant cell biology, ecology, physiology, systematics and evolution.
In third year, more specialised topics are introduced, such as ecosystem dynamics, marine and freshwater algae, plant biotechnology, mycology and pathology, evolution and biology of the Australian flora. In a fourth, Honours, year students undertake a major research project.
Students planning to major in Botany may specialise in a number of areas including:
Plant Ecology and Ecophysiology
Evolutionary Plant Biology
Plant Pathology
Plant Cell and Molecular Biology
Marine Biology
Plant Biotechnology
Suggested subjects for those specialising in the biological area:
Biology 600-141 + 600-142
Chemistry 610-141 + 610-142 or 610-161 + 610-162 (and before 1998: 610-121 + 610-122)
Additional 100-level subjects from: Biology 600-111, Computer Science, Mathematics and Statistics, Physics, Geography, Earth Sciences.
The additional subjects should be chosen to ensure that prerequisites for 200-level subjects are met.
