The Graduate Diploma in Education is a one-year full-time course for graduates who have successfully completed an undergraduate degree and wish to train as secondary school teachers. The course provides studies in Curriculum, Education Policy and Management, Information Technology, Language and Literacy in the Classroom, and two Learning Area studies. You also undertake School Experience and Professional Practice through school placements.
Most subjects are taught in conjunction with subjects in the Bachelor of Teaching degree.
On completion of the Graduate Diploma in Education course graduates should be able to:
demonstrate the essential knowledge and skills to perform competently as a beginning teacher;
comprehend the intellectual, social and psychological aspects of their work with learners and synthesise theory and practice;
understand the key concepts of curriculum policy formation and curriculum development;
sustain positive professional relationships with students, other teachers and, where appropriate, parents;
evaluate and use constructive criticism of their own work and of the institutions in which they will teach; and
develop theoretical understandings of schooling and education and implement an ongoing program of self education appropriate to their personal and professional needs.
This qualification is recognised by the Standards Council for the Teaching Profession and Registered Schools Board (or equivalent bodies).
Applicants must have qualified for a degree or a diploma in a recognised university or tertiary institution, and must have completed the requirements for the Learning Area studies intended (see below).
Credit may be awarded for previous study, up to a maximum of 50 points. Credit is determined by the Faculty and awarded at the time of enrolment. Credit is not normally granted for studies undertaken more than ten years prior to the year of admission to the Graduate Diploma in Education.
For further details a copy of the Faculty of Education credit policy is available from the Faculty Office.
Leave of absence is not normally available and will only be considered in exceptional circumstances. Enquiries should be directed to the Faculty Office.
