Social Theory is an interdepartmental program which analyses the ways in which social life is organised and, sometimes, transformed. It questions the everyday assumptions which shape our lives and reflects in a systematic manner about such issues as the division of power, the nature of identity, forms of agency and rationality and our experiences as pre-modern, modern or postmodern subjects.
The Ashworth Centre for Social Theory is housed in the History and Philosophy of Science department. The four themes of inquiry emphasised at the Centre are:
contemporary critical theories
psychoanalysis, social theory and identities
social theory and the analysis of social and political relations
critical theories, science and technologies
The interdisciplinary scope of the Social Theory program provides a context where the theoretical and substantive issues raised in such disciplines as Sociology, History, Women's Studies, Political Science, Anthropology and Cultural Studies can be further explored and critically reflected upon. This makes Social Theory an appropriate choice for students with a critical interest in any of the social or human sciences.
The Social Theory program commences at second year. The general prerequisite for entry is the completion of 50 points of first year in any area of study within the Arts Faculty.
A Major in Social Theory consists of nine 12.5 point subjects, totalling 112.5 points. It comprises:
Two first-year subjects in any area of study (25 points), and;
Seven second/third-year subjects in Social Theory totalling 87.5 points, which must include the following four core subjects:
And three subjects from the list of optional subjects below.
